Director’s letter

Dear EBIS Families,
Welcome to the 2019-2020 school year!
The school’s learning and teaching is based on the belief that every student has the ability and the right to develop and progress at his/her own rate and to learn in an independent and happy environment.
This year a strong emphasis is placed on:
• Encouraging pupils to take risks with their learning, to be independent thinkers and to deeply be engaged in their own learning.
• Teaching effective learning habits so by the time our pupils leave year 6, they are well prepared for the expected, but can also tackle the unknowns
• Providing an exciting and stimulating environment that equips each child to meet the challenges of the 21st Century
With your support, our dedicated staff will continue working hard to nurture our students’ academic excellence, encouraging each student to achieve his or her full potential responsibly and independently. This means that we will be changing the process of ‘telling’ students what they need to know”. You as parents do not teach your babies how to walk. Rather, they see you walk, they gain the desire to walk, they try and fail ‘a hundred times’ … and then, they begin to walk. This is discovery learning. It is inquiry-based learning. It is mostly self-directed learning. Sure, they receive assistance from the people around them but the assistance is supportive; the adults facilitate the learning. It is not spoon-feeding. You do not instruct babies by saying “Left foot first, now check your balance”
To drill students with information prior to ‘the test’ to maximise their potential for a high test score does not qualify them to be independent life-long learners.
Together, let’s focus all our energy to make sure that it is evident that our students are growing adequately as an emerging responsible citizen with the strength of character to take on the challenges of the 21st Century.
